Three SIR students presented their research project under the direction of Dr. Ellen Zillak, Ph.D. Benedictine University at the 100th Annual Meeting of the Illinois Section of the Mathematical Association of America (ISMAA) on March 12, 2021. The Illinois Section of the MAA was founded in 1917, two years after the National Association was chartered. The Illinois Section is the tenth-oldest in the Association. The mission of the MAA is to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level. Since its inception, the Illinois Section has worked to help the MAA meet its mission.
Raman Aliakseyeu, Natalie Oliven, and Ethan Thieme’s project provided a count for the size of the generalized and extended symmetric spaces of SO(3, Fq) for all involutions when the characteristic is not equal to two. In addition, they explicitly described the elements in the extended symmetric space and the fixed point group for both involutions.
