IMSA Innovation Hub – Chicago

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy has moved beyond the walls of its internationally recognized Aurora, IL, campus to expand science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs and services in Chicago. IMSA’s University of Illinois-Pilsen Campus office offers STEM enrichment programs for area students and professional development programs for educators.

The program will feature IMSA-developed, algebra-focused activities designed to deepen students’ understanding of mathematical concepts through hands-on, inquiry-driven learning. Math Lab is intended for students who enjoy mathematics and are seeking a more engaging, exploratory, and challenging math experience beyond the traditional classroom.

  • Identify and describe mathematical patterns.
  • Use variables to represent unknown or changing quantities.
  • Translate real-world situations into expressions, equations, tables, or graphs.
  • Explain mathematical reasoning clearly.
  • Use multiple strategies to solve non-routine problems.
  • Work collaboratively on mathematical challenges.
  • Develop confidence and curiosity in mathematics.
  • See algebra as a tool for problem solving rather than a set of isolated rules.
