Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy Emeritus Faculty Establishes International Travel Endowment Fund
On October 4th one of IMSA’s original faculty members and current IMSA Emeritus, Dr. David Workman, made a remarkable gift to fund a brand new endowment, the Dr. Workman International Travel Fund. The purpose of this new endowment fund will be to support international travel for students of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy every year. The fund will be used to help pay for travel expenses/fees for students to attend and participate in global student engagement opportunities, such as the International Student Science fair.
Dr. Workman, who taught at IMSA for over 20 years before retiring in 2008, knows firsthand how important international opportunities can be. From 1986 to 2008 Dr. Workman served as a trailblazing leader for many of the teaching and learning innovations that continue to distinguish and define IMSA to this day. During his time at IMSA he helped partner with many sister STEM schools around the world to help spread the “IMSA way” globally, and even after retiring Dr. Workman spent considerable time at the Mahidol Wittayanusorn school (MWIT) and the Kamnoetvidya Science Academy (KVIS) in Thailand to help train teachers and to lead workshops on problem-based learning, inquiry-based science, and student-centered research groups.
Dr. Workman’s generous donation will help provide support for students travelling internationally and it will also serve as a legacy to Dr. Workman’s continued commitment and passion for IMSA. We at IMSA could not be more excited to receive this gift because the postive impact this fund will have for current and future students will be felt for many years to come.
