A Brief History of Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) was established by the State of Illinois to develop talent and leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In 1986 founding staff and
faculty members created a learning laboratory environment where faculty and staff could research, write and publish as a community of scholars.

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is internationally recognized for inspiring and nurturing students who use their exceptional abilities to improve people’s lives. IMSA’s academically advanced
residential program enables 650 students in grades 10-12 to reach extraordinary levels of achievement. IMSA’s tuition-free residential educational program enrolls a diverse student body of 650 from all areas of
Illinois; admission is highly competitive.

Memberships in Boards, Commissions, Advisory Entities, and Reporting Accountability

Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) receives funding through the Illinois Board of Higher Education budget and is accountable to the Illinois Legislature for support.

IMSA was one of fifteen founding member institutions that established the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (NCSSS) in 1998. IMSA continues to help lead the work of the NCSSS, which now consists of 75+ member institutions. IMSA and similar residential programs in 14 other states are accredited by Cognia.

IMSA is governed by a 17-member Board of Trustees consisting of 13 appointed voting members and four positional non-voting members.
