Summer 2021

IMSA will be offering both virtual and in-person programs at our Aurora campus and Belle Valley School in the MetroEast area this summer. 

Virtual/Distance Programs 

The June virtual programs will be week-long, morning sessions (9 am – 12 noon CST) which will kick off each day with synchronous time on-line with the instructor, followed by individual time to design, build, and/or test the day’s activity, and end each morning with another synchronous session where participants will test or share their progress with the instructor and their peers. Participants will need access to a computer and Internet. For more information on our policies and procedures, please see 2021 Summer Information.

STEM Leagues are mostly asynchronous courses designed around a hot topic in STEM, and may include a book read, documentaries/TED Talks, case studies, and other source or research material, with a culminating chat with an author or expert in the field.

In-Person Programs

Our in-person programming, which will occur in July only, will be following all local and national COVID safety guidelines. Due to our need to have smaller class sizes for social distancing, space in these programs will be limited. The July in-person programs will be all day camps (8:30 – 3:00 CST). Students must bring their own lunch to these programs in order to support our COVID protocols. For more information, please see 2021 Summer Information and our FAQ, both of which will be updated if COVID safety guidelines change.

Some programs are offered in both formats–the difference being that in-person programs will have twice as many activities as the virtual. We do not recommend students enroll for both versions of the same program, as 50% of the in-person activities will be the same as the virtual course.

Calling all mini-Makers! Have you ever wanted to develop and assemble your own toy? Light up your creations? Build a waterslide? Students will hone their inquiring, designing, creating, and building skills on multiple engaging projects. Throughout the week they will be learning about circuits, physics, and engineering. So put on your thinking caps and come join us makers! Materials list for virtual program.
**Military-affiliated students only: for the weeks of July 12th and 19th at Belle Valley School, it's mandatory that students attend and participate all five days, as the program is funded through the AF K-12 STEM Program. Please do not register your child unless you can make this commitment. Dependents of all services and DoD civilians are eligible to attend. Program seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis and a waitlist will be created after those seats are filled. Since seats are limited, if registered participants later find that they are unable to attend, please email studentenrichment@imsa.edu as soon as possible to create an opportunity for another child.

Do you love all things science? Are you an inventor, developing and building your own creations? Maybe you are an engineer, tinkering with and improving on projects? Or maybe you aren't quite sure about science, technology, engineering, and math yet. Come experience a buffet of STEM activities and find your passion! Become a chemist, concocting extra-special bubbles. Use the magic of magnets to create slime that moves on its own and a challenging arcade game to play with others. Work with a team of spies-in-training throughout the week to complete missions that will help you learn the skills necessary to become a super science spy. You will learn how to look like a spy by creating your own movie special effects using chemistry, engineering, and physics. You will learn how to think like a spy by deciphering codes and solving puzzles. Then you will put all your skills to use by planning and creating an “impossible” escape room with your team that will be tested by your fellow campers. Materials list for virtual program.

Be sure to bring your appetites---for STEM, that is! In this camp, students will get the chance to keep the science rolling this summer through super cool scientific inquiries and exciting hands-on projects. From casting a “magic” pH rainbow to unveiling the secrets of "pi", students are sure to be on a roll with these fun discoveries! Additional projects will challenge students to use their engineering skills while harnessing the power of kinetic energy as they create a mini-arcade game, build a mini water wheel, and make self-propelled cars! This STEM Buffet is sure to satisfy your STEM-appetite. Materials list for virtual program.

Can’t make it to Tokyo this summer? Come join us in this camp to discover how STEM concepts can be applied to a variety of sports and help Olympians medal in their events. How can athletes optimize projectile motion to work to their advantage? How does a diver minimize their splash and maximize their score? How is sports equipment made to accommodate forces? The underlying STEM principles for the sports you know and love will be explored. Students will pursue many investigations, including engineering an archer’s bow, and testing cycling gears! **For the weeks of July 12th and 19th at Belle Valley School, the Gold Medal STEM program is funded through the AF K-12 STEM Program. Priority registration was provided to military-affiliated students until April 13th for the program during the week of July 12th, and at this time, program seats are available to any grade-eligible student on a first-come, first-served basis, with a waitlist created after those seats are filled. The programs during the week of July 19th are only open to those who are military affiliated.  Please do not register unless your child can fully participate in this program. Calling all future medical-students!! This program will feature a series of practical, hands-on explorations centered on human anatomy topics that range from the heart and blood, to the bones and muscles! Participants will engage in a fun and challenging bioengineering project that will allow them to apply engineering principles and practices to the structure and function of the human body.

The TALENT Ignite Summer Camp teaches students from 6th-9th grade the fundamental concepts of entrepreneurship, to equip students with the necessary mindset and skills to develop their own product ideas. The concepts taught include: ideation, branding, market research, pitching, and much more. Modules are a mixture of lecture and activity-based learning; this interactive approach promotes active participation from students, encouraging deeper understanding of the material. The camp will culminate with a pitch competition judged by experienced entrepreneurs. The TALENT Ignite Summer Program will be separated into two age-specific groups: 6th-7th grade and 8th-9th grade. This will ensure an age-appropriate maturity level in each group.

This camp is led by student facilitators from the IMSA TALENT (Total Applied Learning for Entrepreneurs) program who are experienced and knowledgeable guides in the creation of marketable ideas.

Join us from July 5th to July 9th as we set about a virtual exploration of Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D Printing, Electronics, and an Introduction to Arduinos! This week will be packed full of various projects that highlight skills we will learn and grow each day! Learn to CAD your own trinket, model, or project, and then make that design come to life as a 3D printed object! We will also learn what microcontrollers like an Arduino are capable of before we try our hand with some simple electronics. This will be an awesome week that will give you a great jumpstart on making and skills you can use for many years to come!

Machine learning is helping doctors diagnose patients more accurately, make predictions about patients' future health, and recommend better treatments. BioCode will provide exposure to machine learning concepts for middle school students through hands-on activities. The students will code in Python on Google Colab (a notebook-style coding platform) and create a machine learning model that predicts breast cancer. On the last two days, students will choose a public medical dataset to build their own machine learning model.

This camp is led by student facilitators from the IMSA AI Med Project Team under the direction of IMSA faculty advisors.

For centuries, long before having a formal name, forensics intertwined science and crime, helping to solve otherwise unsolvable crimes. One strand of hair, one fingerprint left behind, even a crumpled receipt can lead investigators to a suspect. But how? In this course, students will read “Blood, Bullets, and Bones: The Story of Forensic Science from Sherlock Holmes to DNA” by Bridget Heos, a narrative nonfiction look into forensic science. Students will dive deep into topics such as finger-print, DNA, and blood spatter analyses, how hair, fibers, and paint are analyzed in a lab, and the evolution of forensics from past to present (and beyond). The text will be supplemented with age-appropriate videos, crime scene analyses, and more. The mostly asynchronous online format will include discussions, assessments, and several virtual meetings. The weekly time commitment is roughly 4-6 hours.

To qualify for a scholarship, the student’s family is required to submit proof of financial eligibility: if you qualify for SNAP or Free/Reduced Lunch, you qualify, but we need you to submit proof of eligibility.
