AURORA – The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) is one of only 17 high schools in the nation named to Newsweek magazine’s annual list of the top “Public Elites” in the country.
This is the third consecutive year IMSA has been named to its “Best High Schools: The Public Elites” list, available online at http://www.newsweek.com/id/137421/page/1.IMSA President Dr. Max McGee said this national recognition is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of IMSA’s world-class students, faculty and staff.
“To be named to this list not only once, but for three consecutive years, is a reflection of the hard work and persistent dedication day after day of our students, faculty and staff,” McGee said. “The IMSA community and the state of Illinois can be proud of IMSA’s work to ignite and nurture tomorrow’s leaders who will be well prepared to solve our global issues and advance the human condition.”
According to Newsweek, its annual ranking of Best High Schools is based on the Challenge Index, which is “designed to recognize schools that challenge average students, and not magnet or charter schools that draw only the best students in their areas.” As part of this initiative, Newsweek produces the separate “Public Elites” list, because, according to Newsweek, “despite their exceptional quality, their sky-high SAT and ACT scores indicate they have few or no average students.”
The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry. (www.imsa.edu)
